Braves Set 2009 Opening Day Roster

Two players placed on disabled list

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves set their 25-man roster for opening day before Friday night’s exhibition game at Turner Field. Atlanta purchased the contract of one player, while four players were optioned and three others were re-assigned. In addition, left-handed pitcher Tom Glavine (left shoulder rehabilitation) and catcher David Ross (strained right groin) were placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 2 and April 1, respectively.  Right-handed pitchers Tim Hudson (right elbow rehabilitation) and Charlie Morton (strained left oblique) were previously placed on the disabled list.

The Braves optioned right-handed pitcher Manny Acosta, left-handed pitcher Boone Logan and outfielders Gregor Blanco and Brandon Jones to Gwinnett (AAA). Right-handed pitcher Kris Medlen, infielder Brooks Conrad and catcher J.C. Boscan were re-assigned to minor league camp.
Also, the Braves announced that outfielder Jordan Schafer will switch to uniform number 24.

The Braves open the 2009 campaign – their 44th in Atlanta – on Sunday, April 5, at Philadelphia (8:05 p.m. EST, ESPN2).  The club’s home opener is slated for Friday, April 10, versus Washington (7:35 p.m. EST, Peachtree TV).

The season-opening roster includes 12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders:

PITCHERS (12): Jeff Bennett (RH), Blaine Boyer (RH), Jorge Campillo (RH), Buddy Carlyle (RH),

Interesting that Braves are starting with 12 pitchers, considering the 5th starter won't be needed until 4/19 (I think).

Good point altho Bobby over the years always seems to carry 1 more pitcher than other managers.  He doesn't pinch hit as much as other managers, so guess he feels he doesn't need another bat.

IMO it hurts him sometimes not having another bat or glove down there.
