FALCONS SIGN 10 ROOKIE FREE AGENTS AND MAKE OTHER ROSTER MOVES FLOWERY BRANCH, GA – The Atlanta Falcons today signed 10 undrafted rookie free agents, released defensive end Simon Fraser and defensive tackle Kindal Moorehead, waived defensive back Darius Vinnett and offensive lineman Nathan Bennett and signed wide receiver Troy Bergeron. The 10 rookie free agents include: Wide receiver Darren Mougey (San Diego State), wide receiver Aaron Kelly (Clemson), quarterback John Parker Wilson (Alabama), defensive end Maurice Lucas (Colorado), long snapper Robert Shiver (Auburn), offensive lineman Ryan Stanchek (West Virginia), offensive lineman Jose Valdez (Arkansas), linebacker Derek Nicholson (Florida State), punter/kicker Robbie Dehaze (Northern Arizona) and linebacker Brock Christopher (Missouri). Mougey, 6-6, 230 pounds, served as a quarterback and wide receiver at San Diego State. In 2008, he finished third on the Aztec’s in receiving with 34 receptions for 437 yards and four touchdowns. His career receiving totals include 66 receptions for 805 yards (12.2 avg.) and six touchdowns.
Kelly, 6-5, 190 pounds, was one of the top wide receivers in Clemson history and graduated as the school record-holder for career touchdown receptions (20). Last season he caught 67 passes for 722 yards (10.8 avg.) and four touchdowns. Kelly was named a second-team All-ACC selection in 2008 and earned first-team all-conference honors from the Associated Press in 2007.
Wilson, 6-2, 211 pounds, was a three-year starter at quarterback for Alabama and finished his career having completed 664 of 1,174 passes for 7,894 yards and 46 touchdowns. Last season, he led the Crimson Tide to a 12-2 record, which included victories against the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, ninth-ranked Clemson Tigers and 15th-ranked LSU Tigers in the season finale. His career pass attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns all sit atop the Alabama passing charts.
Lucas, 6-4, 260 pounds, started all 13 games at left defensive tackle last season and contributed with 43 tackles (36 solo) six tackles for loss and one quarterback sack en route to being voted as an inaugural member of the Gold Group Commitment Award. In his career, Lucas totaled 107 total tackles, four sacks, three fumble recoveries and two passes defensed.
Shiver, 6-3, 225 pounds, competed in 38 games as the long snapper for the Auburn Tigers. He contributed to a special teams unit that recorded 11 field goals and split the uprights on 22 of 23 points after touchdown.
Stanchek, 6-3, 305 pounds, was a four-year starter at West Virginia competing at the guard position. He paved the way for teammates Pat White and Noel Devine to rush for 1,000-yard seasons in 2008. Stanchek earned first-team All-Big East honors in 2006 and 2008 and was a Sporting News second-team All-America selection in 2007.
Valdez, 6-5, 318 pounds, blocked for prolific Arkansas running backs Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Michael Smith over his collegiate career. He started at tackle in 2007 and ’08 and was moved to the strong side at the start of his senior season.
Nicholson, 6-2, 233 pounds, led Florida State in tackles last season with 81, ranking ninth in the conference. He was also tied for sixth in the ACC with a career-high 15.0 tackles for loss in 2008. Nicholson was a starter for FSU in the past two seasons and became the first Seminole to lead the team in tackles in consecutive seasons since his brother, A.J., accomplished the feat in 2004 and ’05.
Dehaze, 6-3, 193 pounds, totaled 56 field goals and 139 points after touchdown in his Northern Arizona career. The Sherwood, Oregon native split the uprights on 16 of 20 field goals in 2008 while adding 34 extra points to give him a total of 82 on the year. Dehaze also served as the school’s punter last season and averaged 44.4 yards per punt.
Christopher, 6-2, 235 pounds, started in 13 of 14 contests last season at linebacker and ranked second on the Missouri defense with 105 total tackles. He also posted one sack and 7.5 tackles for loss.
Bergeron, 6-2, 195 pounds, competed with the Georgia Force of the AFL for three seasons. In his Force career, Bergeron tallied 328 receptions for 4,335 yards and 96 touchdowns while adding 1,416 kickoff return yards. He was named the AFL Rookie of the Year in 2005 and was a second-team All-Arena selection in 2007. In 2006, Bergeron was signed by the Falcons as an undrafted free agent and following his release after training camp, was signed by the Buffalo Bills to the practice squad in Week 13 of the regular season.
Moorehead and Fraser were both signed by the Falcons as free agents prior to training camp in 2008. Moorehead competed in 14 games and totaled 18 tackles (15 solo) and one sack. Fraser saw action in six games and registered two tackles and one pass defensed.
Vinnett and Bennett were both signed to the Falcons practice squad in December of 2008 where they spent the remainder of the season.
